In early spring, it's time to get the swarm traps prepped and put up. Putting some of comb frames with some empties, squirting done lure or a swarm stick lure (check the shop), and hanging that box up a tree to hopefully nab a colony of free bees to add to your apiary. Leave it up all spring and summer. You should take it down towards the end of fall. Check on them from time to time to see if you got some bees to move in.
Things to remember, you want the opening big enough for the queen to get into the box but not too big for anything else. Thus, today's lesson in why to do these things. It's because if you do the exact opposite and leave it out all winter with the opening on the biggest setting, you get something else to move in.
